Demonstrating in Los Angeles following the acquittal of George Zimmerman.

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement came to national prominence after the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9, 2014. According to Garza, activists in Ferguson encouraged her and her friends to create a national organization with local chapters across the country. As more police shootings and murders of Black youths occurred in the following months—Ezell Ford, Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, and Jerame Reid were among those killed—the movement spread and chapters formed across the nation. BLM now has chapters in every major region of the United States, and the overall movement has led or participated in thousands of protest marches, rallies, sit-ins, and die-ins: demonstrations where protesters lie motionless and silent on the ground pretending to be dead.

Thousands of students continue to help keep the movement alive and active. Their ongoing contributions make BLM one of the most important protest organizations in the United States and around the world.
